Which Focal Length Is Best for Portraits?

Spend enough time around professional photographers and you may hear some say that lenses with fixed focal lengths are the absolute tops when it comes to image quality. With such a vast number of options available, how can a photographer possibly narrow themself down to just one or two prime lenses when you could have a flexible and wide-ranging zoom instead?
Thankfully, Seattle-based photographer and educator Jessica Whitaker has done some of the more difficult work for us by testing five different focal lengths on a Canon 5D Mark IV during an outdoor portrait shoot. In the video below, she gives us a side-by-side comparison of a Sigma 24mm f/1.4 ART, a Sigma 35mm f/1.4 ART, a Canon 50mm f/1.2 L, a Canon 85mm f/1.2 L II and a Canon 135mm f/2 L.
