Nancy Anteby

Congratulations to our Top Pic of the Week, Nancy Anteby. She captured these amazing photos. Read below for more on her photographic process.

I started studying film photography in my sophomore year of college. I only recently realized how lucky I was to learn how to shoot film with a Nikon f3. I found a great deal for it on KEH as well. The f3 is my baby. I took it to Europe with me last summer and I managed to sneak it into Lollapalooza music festival in Chicago last weekend. I learned to love film with the f3. I love digital photography but I enjoy shooting film more. I enjoy the process. I love developing my own film and seeing it come to life in the darkroom.

I love portrait photography because it allows me to connect with people. I love interacting with my subjects and watching them get comfortable / have fun in front of the lens. I’ve used photography to learn about the people around me and strengthen my connections with them.

I’m very much a straight photographer. I have a flash accessory but don’t use it. I don’t use a tripod. (I know I shouldn’t, but) I often shoot on auto with my DSLR. And on top of that, I really hate editing my photos. I know it’s important but I’m 22 years old and lazy.

Chin Up

My best friend Racheli is my muse. When I started taking photography classes, we would just meet up to shoot on campus all the time. We decided to do an impromptu shoot about 20 minutes before sunset on a random summer night. Racheli and I rushed to get in some nice before it got dark out because I prefer shooting with natural light. I love how this shoot has so much attitude. It’s dark but powerful.

Backwards, Upside Down, Inside Out.

Carrying her Canon 70D, Nancy captured another photo of her muse, Racheli at Brooklyn College.

My photography professor gave my class an assignment to submit photos dealing with identity. Instead, I decided to shield Racheli’s identity with this shot. I used a Fujifilm instax mini 8 to shoot the back of her head, and then a Canon 70D to shoot her blocking her face with the print. We had a lot of fun with this shoot in general. It wasn’t about intense eye contact or a perfect wardrobe. We just had fun with it.

BITE

This shot was also a response to a prompt for my photography class. We had to shoot apples. As much as I love still life shots, I would rather do portraits. I think the contrast between the red apple and green hat is really cool.

Looking Back At Lollapalooza

How fun are music festivals!? Nancy recently attended Lollapalooza in Millennium Park, Chicago with her baby,  the Nikon F3,  in hand and captured this photo.

This whole day was an adventure. Apparently any camera with a detachable lens is prohibited from Lollapalooza Music Festival, unless you have a press pass. I managed to sneak my Nikon f3 in, and shoot some really cool people. After shooting this frame, I asked the girl on the right if I could photograph her more and she was so excited to model for a minute. I used 35mm Fujicolor Superia film.

A Moment In Venice

Lastly, Nancy caught a flight out of USA and hit the streets of Venice, Italy with her Nikon F3 to capture this photo.

I studied abroad in Florence last summer. My weekend in Venice was probably the favorite weekend of the summer, but I didn’t realize until a few months later when I finally processed all my film from Europe. I’m so happy I took my film camera to Venice instead of my DSLR. I look at my shots from that weekend and the quality of the images definitely give me a nostalgic vibe. I used 35mm Kodak film for this.
